When should I rekey VS. replace my lock?

You might be wondering whether it’s best to repair your lock or replace your lock. Here’s a guide as to the best times to either rekey or replace your lock as prepared by the professional lock repair in Atlanta team here at Atlanta fast locksmith.

What’s the main difference between rekeying and replacing your door lock?

Replacing your door lock involves the total removal and replacement / change of our door lock itself. Rekeying is a procedure that retains your existing lock body but readjusts its internal mechanisms, causing it to work with a brand new key and rendering previously used keys useless. You will keep the same lock, but the old key will no longer operate. Rekeying is cost effective and inexpensive, but does not necessarily improve the physical security of the lock – only reduces the amount of keys that can open it, which is ideal in the event of lost keys.

When should I rekey and when should I replace my locks?

We recommend rekeying your locks when you’ve misplaced or lost keys to your home or business and want to eliminate any risk of somebody using them to break into your property. We also recommend rekeying if you’ve moved properties and want to enforce full knowledge and control of who can access your property. Lock rekeying is also recommended if you want to remove access to your property for somebody that already has a key to it, such as an ex partner or employee.

We recommend changing your locks if you want to make use of new lock technology by upgrading your locks to keyless locks and smart locks. Lock replacement is also recommended if you are not happy with the brand, design, or condition of your lock – such as if you moved to a brand new property and notice that the locks are not providing proper levels of protection.
